In the methodology and activities

In the preschool and first school year of the primary school, children with impaired calculating can benefit from activities that:

Stimulate prerequisites

•    count accompanying the name of the numbers with your fingers and noted that the quantities increase or decrease
•    compare different amounts  (∆∆∆∆∆∆∆ are less than/more than/the same as ∆∆∆)
•    represent the same amount using different objects
•    think about the concept of +1, -1, +/-0
•    categorize (identifying objectives based on some features. i.e. identify triangles in a group of different shapes)
•    introduce the concept of ordinality: working on position and order of numbers
•    put in order according to certain criteria
•    counting objects in order or not in order
•    propose small problems with +1 and -1

Helpto develop“automatic”*number writing

•    studying numbered arrow cues that provide a consistent plan for number formation;
•    showing a number; covering it and writing it from memory after interval that increases in duration;
•    writing numbers from dictation (spoken name to number form)
•    associate numbers with images similar to the shape of the number
•    tracing dotted numbers
•    copy numbers

*“automatism,” which is the ability to perform complicated actions without conscious thought or intention. Writing number becomes an “automatism” in adult learners. They do not think how to write a number. A person with dyscalculia could not to arrive at this step
